Larimar comes from a single source, and is considered a rare stone. It is the blue color of the mineral pectolite, which is typically white or gray. Larimar: A Brief History

Larimar was first found in 1916 by Father Migues Dominngo Fuertes Loren, who requested permission to mine the blue rock form the Dominica Republic’s Ministry of Mining. Somehow, the request was ignored and the stone lay in the ground and unmined. In 1974, however, the stone was found by Miguel Mendez, who named the stone from his daughter’s name Larissa and the Spanish word for sea (mar) because the natives of the area believed the stone came from the sea. The stone actually comes from a singular area upstream of where the stones were first discovered. This mine is believed to be the only place the stone is found in the entire world.
