• History of Larimar

  Larimar can only be found in the Dominican Republic and is mined on only one mountain. An American named Norman Rilling and a Dominican named Miguel Mendez while walking along the seashore, discovered it in 1974. Mendez is credited for naming the stone by taking the first four letters of his daughter name Larissa and then adding the Spanish name for sea; Mar.

  Mining for Larimar

  Larimar is made deep inside volcanoes, formed when by the crystallization of cooling lava. The only way to acquire these stones is to excavate them from deep inside the volcano. The native Dominicans perform this extremely dangerous job on a daily basis using rudimentary tools and risking their lives in the process.

  Only the best stones containing Larimar will be used for jewelry. They are classified by shape, color and size and polished until they develop an exquisite shine.
